What happens during a BBL HEROic treatment?

During a BBL HEROic treatment, a clear gel is applied over the treatment areas to help your skin absorb light energy. As the treatment begins, you should feel minimal to no discomfort as your provider gently glides the handpiece over the skin.

Pulsed light improves your skin in two ways. Initially, it targets highly vascular and pigmented areas like visible blood vessels or sunspots, breaking them down for absorption by the body. Additionally, the generated heat acts within the collagen-rich areas, triggering the body's healing response and resulting in a reduction of fine lines and wrinkles and a more youthful appearance.

Is BBL HEROic painful?

A treatment with BBL HEROic is generally well-tolerated by most patients. It is commonly described as feeling like a quick snap on the skin, with the sensation fading swiftly as the handheld device pulses over the skin. Thanks to BBL HEROic’s CoolComfort™ technology, which cools the epidermis during the procedure, topical anesthesia is not necessary.

 

After the treatment, it is normal for the skin to feel warm for about 30 to 60 minutes. NYAA Clinic will provide you with an electric mini-fan and thermal water for soothing (alongside aftercare skin products)

What is the downtime for a BBL HEROic treatment?

There is minimal-to-no downtime following treatment with BBL HEROic. Patients can typically resume normal activities immediately. 

 

Key points to remember, include:

 

Skin sensitivity: Your skin may feel sensitive, like a mild sunburn, but this typically subsides within 48 hours.

 

Healing process: You might notice temporary darkening of pigmented areas, along with some redness and swelling. These are part of the natural healing process where damaged cells are replaced by new ones, repairing your skin.

 

Post-treatment care: Follow your provider's advice, avoid direct sun exposure, and wear broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen to protect the skin, especially during the first 72 hours post-treatment. Depending on the skin's pre-existing condition, mild discomfort, dryness, or minor crusting may occur.

 

Skincare and makeup: You can typically resume using skincare products and makeup within 1-2 days post-treatment.

A week or two after a BBL HEROic treatment, your skin will appear more even, brighter youthful, glowing, and smooth. Visible results can be seen in just 1 to 2 treatments, while optimal results are generally seen after completing a series of treatments spaced a few weeks apart. Your skin will continue to improve in the weeks and months following your BBL HEROic sessions.

How many BBL HEROic treatments do I need?

We will work with you to create a customised treatment plan that addresses your specific skin revitalisation needs.

 

Typically, a series of three treatments, spaced approximately three weeks apart, is recommended (forever clear may require more sessions at a more frequent interval). Once you have reached your goals, periodic maintenance treatments will help keep your skin healthy and glowing. If treating alongside MOXI, treatments are 4-6 weeks apart.

We then recommend maintenance 2-3 times per year.

How long is a BBL HEROic treatment?

A BBL HEROic appointment typically takes 30 minutes, depending on the size and areas being treated. The procedure itself is very fast, for example the décolletage can take just 3 minutes of treatment time. Alongside MOXI your appointment may be 1-1.5 hours long including numbing time and depending on treated areas.

Can I combine BBL HEROic with other treatments?

BBL HEROic is easily combined with other Sciton modalities, such as MOXI™ for enhanced results. It may also be combined with other minimally invasive procedures, such as injectables. During your treatment planning session, we can create a plan to address your skin's unique needs.​​​​

Who is not suitable for BBL HEROic?

BBL HEROic is highly versatile, but it may not be appropriate if you:

• Have taken isotretinoin (Roaccutane/Accutane) within the past 6 months

• Are currently using light-sensitising medications

• Have a photosensitive medical condition

• Have active skin infections, open wounds, or severe inflammation in the treatment area

• Have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring

• Have Fitzpatrick skin types V–VI (darker skin) without careful assessment, as there is a higher risk of pigmentary changes

• Have had recent intentional sun exposure, are currently tanned, or have traces of self-tan in the area (which can increase burn risk)

• Are unable to avoid direct, intentional sun exposure for at least 30 days after treatment

• Are pregnant or breastfeeding (due to increased skin sensitivity)

Additional caution may be required for patients with uncontrolled melasma, autoimmune skin disorders, recent laser or resurfacing treatments, or a compromised skin barrier.

All patients undergo a comprehensive consultation and skin assessment to ensure safety and suitability before treatment.

How to Prepare for BBL HEROic

Proper preparation ensures your treatment is safe and effective:

• Avoid intentional sun exposure, tanning beds, and active tanning for at least 2 weeks prior (preferably 3–4 weeks)

• Avoid self-tan and spray tans for 2 weeks before treatment (traces of self-tan in the area can increase burn risk)

• Wear daily SPF 50+ in the weeks leading up to your appointment

• Stop retinoids (including prescription tretinoin), exfoliating acids (AHA/BHA/PHA), and strong actives for 5-7 days prior

• Avoid aggressive exfoliation or skin treatments for 1–2 weeks beforehand

• Inform us of any new medications or skin changes

• Reschedule if you have an active infection, cold sore, or open wound in the treatment area

• Use medical-grade skincare to strengthen the barrier, reduce inflammation, and optimise results​
